We know the actions required to deliver results, but rationalize, “I’ll get around to doing uncomfortable tasks later. Nothing serious will happen if I delay for a while.” The hidden commitment is to enjoy immediate comfort and disregard the potential long-term costs.
I’m describing the ultimate mental trickery–The Colossal Deception No one evades the Colossal Deception, not even Taylor Swift.
Notice yourself in this series of common deceptions to evade reality:
*Contemplate the many hours people divert attention from mentally challenging tasks by organizing computer documents, watching Netflix, or googling to view “Celebrity Plastic Surgeries Gone Wrong.” Distractions are comfort zones.
Each distraction causes cognitive fatigue, which leads to omissions, mental lapses, and mistakes. Distraction makes mentally challenging tasks more difficult. However, mentally challenging tasks often determine success or failure to achieve heartfelt goals.
*Everyone knows the health risks and diseases associated with being overweight or obese. Nevertheless, how many people do you know who deceive themselves by sneaky tricks—like eating 3 medium pizzas a week accompanied by a side order of spinach to decrease feelings of guilt?
*People work for years in an unfulfilling job they to pay the bills while waiting to become financially secure and eventually do work they have passion for. What’s it going to be—the job you get paid for or a career delivering the contribution you were made for?
These are just a few examples of the Colossal Deception. Are you grasping the destructive impact of this evasion of long-term consequences?
The course of action that leads to long-term success may not make you happy in the next 15 minutes.Short-term comfort is guaranteed but comes with a long-term price that is initially invisible through mental trickery. The Colossal Deception fits the analogy: Shooting yourself in the foot and admiring your marksmanship.
Recognizing Colossal Deceptions is the gateway to generating breakthrough results.
